July 2010 - Birthday!

Little Felix Rutter arrived safely and quickly on Sunday in July 2010 at 1:47 am.

There was no waiting around for the little man, who decided at about 10:00 pm that it was nearly time to make an entrance.

I wanted to stay at home as long as possible and was coping ok. Tony was timing contractions and decided that we should probably head to hospital soon (this was at 11:30 pm). I thought that labour was meant to last for hours, so I wasn’t too keen on going in too early. But they could only tell us to go home. And I was vomiting by this stage.

So at Midnight we headed off in the car to the hospital, which was about 10 mins away (but took us 20 mins as I got Tony to pull over each time I had a contraction).

We got into the birth suite at about 12:30 am, where the midwife stated that the baby was nearly here and it wouldn’t be too long. At this stage I was thinking ‘what, how can it be almost here? It’s only been 2.5 hours.’

They tried to do some obs on the babys heart rate and on me, but it was too hard to get a reading as I was moving around too much. I didn’t even get time to consider drugs for pain relief as it was going so quickly. The pain wasn’t too bad.

By about 1:20 am things were moving quickly and before we knew it little Felix was jet propelled out and into the world. He cried straight away and got to come up for cuddles for a good hour before being weighed and measured.

It was a fast labour of only 3.5 hours. I think I was in shock for a bit because it all happened so fast. He was 3.7 kg and because he was born so quick, I had to get taken to surgery for stitches.

Now I just have to heal and get my strength, posture, and back/pelvis alignment back in order and then I can start to do some more physical activity.

We are all pretty happy and glad that all went well throughout the pregnancy and birth!

Riding pregnant - Week 39 - 41

Weight = 61 kg

I finished work 2 weeks before the due date at 38 weeks. Starting to get really hard to sleep at night and its uncomfortable doing most things (putting on shoes, driving, sitting, walking, sleeping).

I have now cracked the 60 kg mark.

So this last few weeks I have not been doing much. Just trying to get sleep and relax as much as I can. Still doing gardening, walking and stretching. But not much more physical activity.

Now we are just waiting.

Riding pregnant - Week 35 - 38

Weight = 58 - 59 kg

Yes we have baby names sorted. This is one of the favourite questions people have (after ‘when are you due?’ and ‘do you know what your having?’).

It’s my birthday in the first week of June, and Tonys in the second week of June - 7 days apart. We hoped that baby didn’t come early as we want our birthdays to be spread apart a little bit! Looks like we get to keep our birthdays to ourselves. Yay.

It’s starting to get colder now. So I’m not missing riding that much. But my mind wanders and I have grand plans for our huge backyard. I want to get some dirt delivered so I can build a pump track and dirt jumps in our yard. The existing dirt is really hard and clayey. Maybe I am missing my bike more than what I think...

My fleet of seven bikes, has now been reduced to six. I sold my DH bike. The Commencal Mini DH has been with me for a few years, and we have had some good times together (and a few bad crashes...). But it is unlikely I will have time to ride DH when baby arrives, so I figured it was best to sell the bike. I can always get a new shiny one later.

It’s getting hard work carrying things up and down the stairs at home. Its more the bending over and picking stuff up, than the actual carrying part. It just seems like things always need to either go up the stairs or go down the stairs. It may sound strange, but pushing a shopping trolley is actually really hard work! You must use your ab muscles a fair bit to steer it through the isles. Seeing as my ab muscles are stretched beyond belief this means hard work for trolley pushing.

I plan to finish work 2 weeks before the due date. I’ve been working full time for 10 years, so it will be strange not going to work each day.

I can fit into a few pairs of my ‘non pregnant’ stretchy work pants still, but have one pair of maternity jeans and one pair of black maternity work pants that I tend to wear a bit. Thanks to Kmart for cheap clothing options. There is no way I want to spend $100 on ‘designer maternity pants’!

We are going to use reusable nappies in combination with disposables. The amount of nappies that babies churn through we will have our own little landfill dump if we use disposables. So we figured reusables are the way to go. They have come a long way from the Terry Towling type that I was in as a baby. You can get all kinds of cool colours and designs. If we have a system set up for washing and drying it might not be too bad. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I haven’t packed my ‘hospital bag’ yet. There are websites full of lists of things to take. By the sounds of it some people spend a long time planning and packing their bags. I don’t usually pack my bags for a holiday until the day or two before I go. I figured all I really need for about 4 days in hospital is some toiletries and some comfy clothes.

Went to Mt Gravatt with friends who were downhilling. Tony spent the day doing runs, and I had to miss out. :( I had a roll around the car park on a bike and would have loved to have done a run. But probably not the most sensible thing to do. So I went shopping instead.

I have stopped all riding for now.

Sleeping is getting harder. I am so tired, but wide awake. Apparently it’s the hormones. I have also managed to get a cold (at 37 weeks). It is terrible. Everytime I cough or sneeze, poor baby gets squished into all kind of shapes in there. It will probably come out with its body contorted in a strange position. I guess it should be pretty ‘bendy’.

At least I look pregnant now!

Riding pregnant - Week 29 - 34

Weight = 57 kg

Starting to get more tired now just from every day activities. But still out riding the MTB when I can. I need to be selective about how much I ride, otherwise I have no energy left for housework and other stuff.

My ribs are starting to hurt where the baby is trying to take over more space. I still have bad heartburn, but the bleeding gums have stopped.

Signed up for Team Banshee Australia for the next season. I am so keen to get back out on the bike. I know it will be tough though when the baby arrives, but we will try to make it work.

Had another scan at 32 weeks to check the growth of the baby. All is looking good and contrary to what people may think, the baby is not a midget. The Dr says its below the average size, but still well within ‘healthy’.

Filled out forms to get ‘baby’ on a childcare waiting list for next year. We aren’t sure of our plans yet, but figured we should get our names down so the option is there.

We had our 3 antenatal baby classes. Some of the ladies there were huge. I am grateful I am not enormous. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable they must be. They made us put a shirt and a nappy on a doll. Tony managed to get the shirt on upside-down. heheh. Made me laugh.

Had my first day where I rested on the lounge for an hour or so. Not my idea of fun when there is lots of other things to do, but I had run out of energy.

The cat pee’d inside so I had to get on my hands and knees to scrub the floor. Nice. Then I hit my head on the sink when I tried to get up. Bending over to put on my shoes, pick things off the floor, hang washing on the line is really hard work.

Went out for drinks with friends and had to stand up the whole time. My back was so sore, I feel like an old person needing to sit down all the time.

At 34 weeks I stop playing volleyball. Im too slow to chase the ball and when I dive in the sand I take a while to get back up...

I’m still doing yoga which is good, but much less enthralling that MTB rides. At least I get a good stretch once a week.

Riding pregnant - Week 26 - 28

Weight = 56 kg

XC rides are now down to about 10 km or 1 hr. The bumpy trails make the baby push on my bladder, which isn’t too comfortable.

Flew down to SA for a wedding. Flying wasn’t too bad, but still need to get up to pee a lot.

Did a 7 km fast walk with my normal running partner at 28 weeks. My back, hips and pelvis were so sore afterwards, probably not the best idea.

I have stopped my weight training now as my trainer has moved interstate. Started doing yoga though instead – not exactly the same, but at least I’m stretching and doing something. I’m still walking about 5 km a day most days just getting to work.

Went to the gold coast to watch tony in a triathlon. See the race report here. I spent the day chasing him around on the MTB taking photos, which was good fun.

The obstetrician says it will be a small baby but still in the healthy range. That sounds good to me.

Threw up on the way to work today (29 weeks). I think my stomach is just squished up and there isn’t much room in there for food. My ribs hurt a bit now from baby pushing on them.

At 28 weeks the average baby weighs about 1.1 kg.
